This was my first novel, and although my skills as a writer have increased since then, I still think it’s an incredible story. If you like the traditional story line of good versus evil, or believe that power corrupts – then this is the story for you.

When Tom Franken wakes in a field with no memory of his life or how he got there, he’s left but with one course of action - to follow the strange but powerful instinct to head east. His journey lands him in a small, somewhat impoverished village along the coast of Maine where for some unexplainable reason, people accept him as one of their own. That includes a young widow and her brother who offer him food and a place to sleep in exchange for working as a handyman at their inn.

Everything feels so perfect, so comfortable as a deep bond begins to take root between him and the family he works for. But then nothing last forever…

An evil begins to invade his thoughts and dreams with images so dark and real that they leave no question about their meaning. In a shaken state, few things remain certain to Tom. But two stand out as glaring truths. An evil presence is coming for him – and it’s coming from his past.

This is one dark story that threatens to rip your emotions out by the fistful. It’s not gory or splatter punk, but the situations are definitely graphic. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone under the age of 16. From a story point of view, it’s unique and one that will stay with you for quite some time. J/W

Touches

‘Touches’ is my take on the time-honored favorite of haunted houses. I love these stories with only one caveat – I never cared for the contrived mechanisms that were used to keep the story progressing. It always involved someone going into the house, finding out about the danger and then being “trapped” in the house in some fashion. Being trapped (unbreakable doors and windows…) was the only way to keep the characters from running for their lives once they discovered it was haunted.

So when I sat down to write ‘Touches’ I did so with the goal of making the situation more believable. Once my main character (Julie, the heroine) discovers the danger set before her – she gets the hell out with every intention of never going back. It takes a matter of the utmost importance to compel her to conquer her fear and venture back inside.

I also wanted a character that had to overcome a major conflict from her past to stand a chance of surviving to the end of the story. The story is as much about the demons from her past as it is the demons that inhabit the very framework of her old Victorian.

I also set out with two challenges to myself. One – I wanted to test my skill of writing from a woman’s point of view; and two – I wanted to test my skill of keeping the reader on the edge of the seat, even though the story is all flashback (tackling your empathy and concern for the main character head-on when you already know that she survives). I feel that to grow as a writer, you have to constantly stretch and improve your skills.

What starts out as the dream of a young couple to escape the rat race, turns into the heart wrenching fight for life and death. If only they had asked the neighbors. Then they would have known why the old Victorian had stood empty for nearly half-a-century. They would have heard the horror stories about the dark, sinister presence that resides inside. They would have known why grown men are too scared to even set foot on the porch.

You can proclaim with all your heart that they don’t exist. But once you’ve been touched – you know better.

If you like ghost stories, then this book is for you. J/W
